Medical Education - General Surgery

This five-year residency program prepares individuals for board certification in General Surgery.  It is a progressive program that provides the resident with increasing responsibility beginning with instruction and guidance in the evaluation and care of surgical patients.  Early concentration is placed on pathology, anatomy, radiology, oncology, anesthesia and nutrition as these relate to surgery.  Residents first serve as scrubbed assistants with surgical teams, performing portions of simple surgical procedures during the second year as ability permits.  Residents rotate through major tertiary care hospitals for trauma, surgical oncology as well as pediatric and cardiovascular surgery.  The fourth year resident assumes the position of Chief Resident in surgery under the supervision of the Director and Chief of Surgery.
